Text: Dahshur, a royal necropolis 40 kilometres south of Cairo, has only recently been opened to the public, having been a military zone until 1996. The mostly ruined Black Pyramid of Amenemhet III is off limits to visitors. Its black granite pyramidion (top-most stone) can be seen in the Cairo Museum.

Text: Bab al Nasr is the only one of the three major gates of ancient Cairo composed of two rectangular towers. Bonaparte's troops used it to protect themselves from the rebellious Cairo population.

Text: The two minarets that spring from the towers belong to the Mosque of al-Mu'ayyad, which is located just inside the gate. They were placed atop the gate some 400 years after it was built, and make it seem far mightier than the Northern Gates.
