	Ibn Tulun Mosque-Cairo-Egypt Author: Marta Leonor Vidal Text: At approximately 26.318 square meters in size, is the third largest mosque in the world. It is the oldest mosque in Egypt that has survived in a fairly original form. Its minaret is Cairo's only minaret with a spiraling external staircase and the overall structure is unique in Egypt.

This is a late example in Cairo of the open courtyard plan on a large scale, and the last such hypostyle mosque to be built in Cairo. There is an ablution fountain in the middle of the courtyard.

The two remaining ones are particularly slender and elegant with their zigzag carved shafts.

It has a large conch vault whith nine tiers of dripping stalactites. A band of carved stone inlaid with marble and red and turquoise colored stones frames the doorway.
	The complex of Sultan Qalaun-Cairo-Egypt Author: Marta Leonor Vidal Text: The complex of Sultan Qalaun was built along the Sharia el-Muizz (street) in 1284 by Sultan el-Mansur Qalaun. It comprises a mosque-medersa, a mausoleum and a mauristan (charity hospital).
